Thrilling Locations: Part 3

November 16, 2016 by Andrew Warren 3 Comments

Whew! Yesterday I got to type the final two words in my Red Phoenix manuscript… “The End!”

There’s still quite a bit of work to be done, of course. Editing, proofing, publishing… But for now, the heavy lifting is done. And that means it’s time to present the third and final location report for Caine’s adventure across China:

thspr

After evading authorities in Beijing, Caine and his friends attempt to travel to Hong Kong using China’s advanced high-speed rail system. Like similar trains in Europe and Japan, China’s high-speed rail lines are engineering marvels, capable of traveling at speeds in excess of 250 kmph. Some of the newer trains contain sleeper berths, dining cars, and even Wi-Fi hubs.

Of course, when your list of enemies includes China’s Ministry of State Security, the American NSA, and a secretive Triad crime family, your travel may not go as planned. Caine is forced to make a slight detour and finds himself in one of China’s polluted Cancer Villages.

screen-shot-2013-02-25-at-11-52-44-am

The bleak, desolate town of Huagu is a fictional creation, but it is based on real locations such as Yanglingang, Hangzhou, and other small towns and villages. Lax or non-existent environmental regulations in these areas have allowed factories and corporations to pollute the water and air to such an extent that residents suffer cancer, birth defects, and other illnesses at rates that exceed the national average by a vast margin.

Leaving the tiny village of Huagu behind, Caine next travels to one of the most spectacular cities in the world, and the most populous city in China: Shanghai!

shanghai_cranes__5_2858121k

Shanghai has been describes as the “Showpiece” of China’s booming economy. The city reinvents itself on a daily basis, and the amount of construction within its borders is astounding.  This definitely has an impact on Caine’s mission, as he finds himself involved in a fight to the death onboard a WTW 220E… one of the largest dump trucks in the world!

Just look at that thing! Here is a picture of a similar model, parked next to an SUV, to give a sense of scale:

As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to work it into the story somehow!

Later, Caine and a friend travel beneath the Huang Pu River by way of the Bund Sightseeing tunnel. This colorful attraction makes use of magnetically levitated cars, and takes passengers on a short ride through a psychedelic light show complete with trippy electronic music.

Caine’s final destination: One of the most famous buildings in Shanghai’s distinctive skyline, the Oriental Pearl Tower.

This unique structure was completed in 1994, and its distinctive spheres were supposedly inspired by a Tang Dynasty poem. Caine visits the arcade in the lower sphere, where he finds some unlikely assistance for his dangerous mission.  (Special shout-out to Samuel, from the Orion Team group @ Good Reads, for suggesting this awesome, hidden location!)

And that’s a wrap… of course there are a few more locations and scenes in the book, but I have to save some surprises for the readers!

China is a vast, beautiful country, with a rich and varied cultural history.  I could write ten books set there and still not run out of fascinating places to visit and explore.  Stunning temples, lost cities, bustling night markets… the possibilities are endless, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Caine or one of his associates makes another trip there in the near future.

Red Phoenix will be out soon, but in the meantime, you can check out the first two books in the series, Devil’s Due, and Tokyo Black.  They’re both in Kindle Unlimited, and Devil’s Due is available on Audible as well.

Where would you like to see Caine visit in future adventures?  I’d love to hear your thoughts… please let me know in the comments section below!

Thrilling Locations: Part 2

Tracking down Thomas Caine:

Work has been progressing well on the next Thomas Caine thriller. I felt like it was time to share some new and interesting locations readers can expect to visit in the next book. So without further ado, let’s jet off to the The People’s Republic of China!

Although most of the story is set in mainland China, I couldn’t resist a quick action scene at the Kwun Tong Promenade, on the outskirts of Hong Kong.

The glowing cube sculpture represents stacks of paper and heavy machinery, reflecting the area’s history as an industrial site.  I thought it would also makes a great location for a spy’s live drop, until things go wrong…

A good chunk of action is set around Beijing, the nation’s capitol. Beijing is an amazing city, and is a showcase of the rapid economic, technological, and cultural growth the country is undergoing.

On his way into the city, Caine drives past one the city’s most notable landmarks, the stunning National Stadium. The stadium was designed for the 2008 Olympic Games.  The bands of metal that surround the structure are meant to resemble a bird’s nest. Hence, the building’s nickname of “The Nest.”

Later, Caine and a friend make stop in the beautiful Yindingqiao Hutong. China’s Hutongs (which means “old lanes”) are a fascinating glimpse into the dynasties of China’s past.

Walking through one now is like stepping into a time machine. Many of these beautiful old neighborhoods were destroyed after the founding of the People’s Republic. Today, some of the remaining Hutong’s have been designated as protected areas.

Finally, while Caine fights to accomplish his mission in China, Rebecca, his superior at the CIA, must battle against internal politics and corruption. Her investigation takes her to the secretive NSA headquarters in Maryland, home of TAO, the Tailored Access Operations group. This team of cyber-warriors is tasked with hacking enemy computer networks and hardware.

That’s all for now… next time, we’ll take a look at the final leg of Caine’s journey across China.

In the meantime, you can check out the first two books in the series, Devil’s Due, andTokyo Black.  They’re both in Kindle Unlimited, and Devil’s Due is available on Audible as well.

Stay tuned for more exciting news from the world of Thomas Caine…

Awesome Gang Interview

August 14, 2016 by Andrew Warren Leave a Comment

Amazonreview1FB

A few months ago, I did an interview with Vinny over at Awesome Gang.com. People really seemed to enjoy the last interview I did with Brian Drake, so I figured I should post a link to this one as well. I hope you guys find it interesting! Here’s an excerpt… click the link at the end of this post to read more:

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written:
Hi everyone! My name is Andrew, and I’ve worked in the entertainment industry for over a decade as a post supervisor, story producer, and writer. I was born and raised in New Jersey, where I grew up on a steady diet of James Bond movies, comic books, and action-adventure TV shows like Mission Impossible, The A-Team and The X-Files. I’ve written several screenplays, some comic books, and tons of promotional material. I was also a writer on the Youtube Red show Fight of the Living Dead. But this year, I got serious about writing my own fiction, and I completed two books in the Thomas Caine series. (click link at end of post for more!)

For any authors out there looking for affordable ways to promote their books, The team at Awesome Gang is… well, awesome! They’re a smaller site, but they’ve been increasing their visibility and reach every day. Each time I work with them I notice better and better results, and their new staggered promotions helped give my Tokyo Black launch an extra big push!

Most importantly, Vinny is a great guy to work with. When you email him he responds like a human being, which I can’t tell you how much I appreciate. If there’s a problem, or something goes wrong, he will work with you to fix it quickly and efficiently. And if you need advice or have questions about the best way to promote your book, trust me; Vinny is a guy you want to talk to. The fact that he has kept his service affordable speaks to his commitment to supporting new authors. I doubt you’ll find a better bang for your buck anywhere else in this business!

Please check out the interview HERE.

Let me know what you think! If you can come up with any new questions you’d like to see, post them in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer. And don’t forget to check out Tokyo Black and Devil’s Due, now FREE on Kindle Unlimited!

Andrew Warren

Thrilling Locations

August 10, 2016 by Andrew Warren 1 Comment

Where in the world is Thomas Caine?

I’m about halfway through the next Thomas Caine thriller, and I wanted to share some of the exciting and exotic locations our favorite former assassin will be visiting this time around. First up, we have the world’s tiniest coffee shop, the Coffee Tower…

coffeetower

This quaint, miniature café is located in the beautiful city of Riga, Latvia, which will also be featured in the book.

riga1

Riga has to be one of the most breath-taking cities on earth… it looks like it sprang to life right out of a fairy tale.  I first discovered Riga while doing research for a TV show a couple years ago. As soon as I saw the stunning architecture and rustic cobblestone streets, I knew I had to have Mr. Caine visit there sooner or later.

House_of_Blackheads_and_St._Peter's_Church_Tower,_Riga,_Latvia_-_Diliff

But like most cities, Riga has a dark side as well… it’s not all pastel cafes and delightful coffee shops. The neighborhood known as “The Quiet Centre” isn’t featured in the tourist brochures… it’s a tough spot full of dive bars, dark alleys, and shady characters… so of course Mr. Caine will have to pay it a visit as well.

2013-11-30-14-25-51

That’s all for now… I’ll be doing more location reveals later in the week. And later this month, I’ll share a first glimpse at the new cover!

In the meantime, you can check out the first two books in the series, Devil’s Due, and Tokyo Black.  They’re both in Kindle Unlimited now, and Devil’s Due is available on Audible as well.

Stay tuned for more exciting news from the world of Thomas Caine…

THANK YOU SPEECH

July 27, 2016 by Andrew Warren Leave a Comment

Amazonreview1FB

Good morning everyone!

It’s the second day of the TOKYO BLACK launch, and so far, I have to say, things are going quite well! Thomas Caine and his motley crew of gangsters, spies and assassins have managed to crack the top 100 in two categories… Not bad for the second day of release. We’ve got quite a ways to go, but I think we’re off to a good start. To everyone who bought a copy, from the bottom of my heart, thank you! I hope you enjoy it!

I’d like to give a HUGE shout out to my advance reader team… Reviews were excellent, and I’m ecstatic that most people loved the book! But more importantly, I’m so grateful that everyone took the time to craft some really thoughtful, insightful reviews. I choked up while reading some of them! I know how valuable your time is, and it means so much to me that you guys were willing to put aside some precious moments of your day share your thoughts about my book.

If you’ve read TOKYO BLACK or DEVIL’S DUE, could I ask you to please leave an honest review at Amazon? It is so important to independent authors like myself… we depend on your honest reviews to attract readers. Just a sentence or two of your honest thoughts (good, bad or indifferent) would be a great help, and I would really appreciate it.

CLICK HERE TO LEAVE A REVIEW – THANK YOU!

Keeping on the topic of thanks, I would also like to thank the self-publishing community. I’ve been in the entertainment industry for years, but I have never worked with a more supportive, helpful, and genuine group of people. People like Mark Dawson, Joanna Penn, Chris Fox, Bryan Cohen, and countless others have taken time out of their busy schedules to share advice, tips, information, and most importantly, encouragement. Without that support, I never would have made it this far.

That’s all for today… If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading! Now I have to get to work on a certain spy thriller set in the most populous Asian country in the world… more info coming soon!
